Fall Forward – “Forgiveness That Sets You Free”

Fall Forward - "Forgiveness That Sets You Free"

Main Text: Luke 15:11–32 (The Parable of the Prodigal Son)

Main Points
	1.	Forgiveness is Essential
	•	“Forgiveness isn’t a luxury for the guilty; it’s oxygen for the human soul.”
	•	We all need forgiveness because sin is universal.
	•	Pretending to be holy doesn’t get us closer to God—humility does.
	•	“When I am full of myself, there is no room for God.”
	2.	Forgiveness Has Already Been Given
	•	Forgiveness isn’t something we chase—it’s something we accept.
	•	You can’t “work off” guilt; you can only receive grace.
	•	Stop saying “I can’t forgive myself.” Forgiveness belongs to God, not us.
	3.	Forgiveness Can Be Abused or Misunderstood
	•	“If grace hasn’t changed you, it hasn’t reached you.”
	•	Grace doesn’t give us permission to sin—it transforms us to live differently.
	•	True forgiveness changes your relationship with sin.

Sermon Description

We all mess up. We all fall short. But forgiveness isn’t about trying harder—it’s about falling forward into God’s grace. In this message, “Forgiveness That Sets You Free,” we look at one of Jesus’ most powerful stories: the Prodigal Son. You’ll see that forgiveness isn’t something you earn—it’s already been given.

Whether you’re struggling to forgive yourself, battling guilt, or just tired of pretending everything’s fine, this message will help you experience real freedom in Christ.

Small Group Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think it’s so hard for people to receive forgiveness, from others or from God? (Luke 15:11–32; Romans 3:23)

  2. How do guilt and shame show up in everyday life? What are some ways people try to “work off” their mistakes instead of accepting grace? (Colossians 2:13–14; 1 John 1:9)

  3. What do you think it means to “fall forward into God’s grace”? How is that different from just trying to get back up on your own? (Romans 8:1; Psalm 103:12)

  4. Have you ever found yourself in the “older brother” role, doing everything right but missing the heart of grace? What did that look like? (Philippians 3:9; Isaiah 64:6)

  5. What’s one way we can make sure forgiveness leads to transformation instead of complacency? (Titus 2:11–12; Luke 15:24)

2 Deep Journal Questions

  1. What’s one mistake or regret you’ve been holding on to that God already forgave? What keeps you from letting it go?

  2. If you truly believed God’s forgiveness was final and complete, how would that change how you see yourself today?
